There is no opportune time for dental emergencies; they often happen when it’s least convenient! Serious emergencies like broken or displaced teeth usually need to be addressed immediately. But what about severe tooth pain? Here are seven toothache symptoms that you shouldn’t ignore and why you should see your dentist promptly.
1. Sharp Pain
Pain is usually a sign that something isn’t quite right with one of your teeth. If you’re experiencing sharp or throbbing pain, you should visit your dentist without delay so they can determine the source of your discomfort. Sharp pain is often caused by cavities, but sometimes abscessed teeth can also cause painful infections.
2. Sensitivity
Increased sensitivity often accompanies sharp pain. One cause of increased sensitivity is bruxism, a condition that causes patients to grind or clench their teeth during the nighttime. Sensitivity can also be indicative of a cavity or abscessed tooth. Sensitivity to temperate and sugar are also signs that likely point towards a cavity.
3. Discoloration
Over time, your teeth can become stained and discolored if you consume things like coffee, wine, and tea. This staining can typically be addressed with various whitening treatments, but if you notice discoloration that starts to change in color from yellow to dark brown or grey, there could be a hidden problem. Sometimes the pulp inside of your tooth can die and spawn an infection, which will need to be treated quickly to prevent further problems from developing.
4. Swollen Glands
If you notice any swelling around your neck or jawline, it might mean that the infection has spread from your tooth. If you have an abscessed tooth combined with swollen glands, you should seek medical attention promptly, as this means other organs in your body are at risk.
5. Loose Teeth
There are various options for treating gum disease, but it depends on how far along it’s developed. If you have loose teeth because of your toothache, you might be experiencing advanced stages of gum disease that require immediate medical attention—total tooth loss is a real possibility if you don’t seek treatment.
6. Bleeding or Swollen Gums
Bleeding and swelling of the gums can happen from time to time, but if it’s happening consistently and is coupled with a toothache, you should see your dentist for treatment. This could be an indication of gum disease and catching gum disease early on is crucial to keeping your smile in a healthy state.
7. Bad Breath
If you’re experiencing constant bad breath or a foul taste that won’t go away, see your emergency dentist right away. It might be a sign of an abscessed or infected tooth. When this happens, the tooth can emit a foul odor that is far worse than your average case of morning breath.
If you’re experiencing any of these toothache-related symptoms, don’t hesitate to contact your emergency dentist. Tooth pain isn’t something you should have to live with, and inaction will only increase the likelihood of a more serious problem developing!
