As part of your long-term oral care, the dentists at Texas Dentistry recommend that you visit our dental office once every six months for a cleaning and checkup. While at-home oral care is crucial to keeping your teeth and gums healthy, routine checkups are necessary as well. Comprehensive exams allow us to confirm the current state of your oral health and whether your at-home care is sufficient. We’ll also make sure to remove any plaque and tartar we find. Keep in mind that tartar, or calcified plaque, can only be removed by a dentist.
Fluoride is a common mineral found in the foods we eat, our drinking water, and of course our oral care products like toothpaste and mouth wash. As part of your routine cleaning, we’ll make sure to also perform a routine fluoride application afterward. This treatment not only protects teeth following your cleaning but strengthens tooth enamel and prevents the development of future cavities. It’s especially pertinent for children to receive this treatment as they are generally at higher risk of tooth decay than other groups.
Many people don’t realize they have bruxism until a dentist tells them, but those who frequently wake up with jaw pain or headaches should take note. Bruxism, or chronic teeth grinding and clenching of the jaw, can easily lead to temporomandibular joint disorder if left untreated. With a custom-made nightguard from our dental office, we can not only remove this chronic pain but protect your tooth enamel from erosion, chipping and cracking, causing a dental emergency.
Dentists are in a unique position to catch problems you may not otherwise think about, including systemic problems like oral cancer. As the sixth most common form of cancer in the world, it’s important that you maintain routine checkups, even if you have no risk factors. Approximately 53,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer every year, but comprehensive exams of your oral structures can work to reduce your risk as well as healthy habits.
